Precious Moments was started by Sam Butcher who began drawing the child-like characters with their signature large, almond-shaped eyes and Biblical messages. He first gave his drawings and cards to family and friends to make them know they were loved by God.
He and his business partner, Bill Biel, began producing Butcher’s art on cards and posters to sell commercially. While attending a Christian booksellers’ convention in the early 1970s, they received several orders and sparked the interest of the Enesco Corporation, which wanted to make the art into ceramic figurines.

The three-dimensional figurines, which were introduced in 1978, were an immediate hit with the public and demand for them increased rapidly. The child-like figures are immediately identifiable and include Christian quotes. They are readily recognizable world-wide and are collected and cherished by collectors and as gifts.
The Precious Moments Easter Collectibles include one little girl kneeling beside a bucket of oyster shells. She is holding an oyster that contains a pearl. The quote on this figurine is, “It is no secret what God can do.” Some of the Precious Moments Easter Collectibles figurines raise money for Easter Seals, such as the one of a physically handicapped child on crutches with the quote, “Blessed Are They That Overcome.”
Other Precious Moments Easter Collectibles include one child pulling a smaller child in a wagon holding an Easter flower with the quote, “Easter’s On Its Way.” Another has a little girl holding a baby bunny, with the quote, “Wishing You a Happy Easter.” There’s one with a child holding an Easter basket with eggs and a chick with the quote, “Wishing You a Basket Full of Blessings.”
One little girl figurine is wearing a mob cap, sitting next to a hen in a nest with a basket full of eggs beside her has the quote, “Eggspecially For You.” Another Easter Seal figurine is a little boy angel kneeling beside a baby seal. He is placing a pair of fake bunny ears on the seal with the quote, “Heaven Bless You Easter Seal.”
Another Precious Moments Easter Collectible figurine is a little girl wearing her matching Easter dress and bonnet, sitting on a blanket having a picnic with her picnic basket placed next to her. A tiny bunny rabbit is peeking his head out from under the blanket she is sitting on, with the quote, “We’re so Hoppy You’re Here.”
The Precious Moments company produces well over 1,000 different pieces overall and adds new figurines each year. In 1989, Butcher built a Precious Moments chapel where people can worship, which he believed was part of his mission assigned by God, giving the public even more connection with the figurines and what they stand for.
