The first line of Herend figurines was introduced in the 1870s. Although animals were the first line to be created, the folk designs were their best sellers until 1920, when the animal figurines took over popularity. A real demand began in the 1920s and they are still highly sought after today. These marvelous animal figurines were usually the handiwork of an artist’s own experience, turning out creatures they had personal contact with.
The fishnet design was first introduced in 1874, by an artist seeing the fish-scale design on a Chinese plate and painting the design on the breast of a rooster, to suggest feathers. It wasn’t until the 1960s when it was used on the animal figurines from head to toe. It is now a trademark, depicting quality, uniqueness and attention to detail.
